| → Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Strategies in Flood Affected Areas in Punjab |
1. Drinking Water Facilities
Context
Punjab is a province of almost 90 million people. Less than 50% of its population has access to piped drinking water with less than 30% of rural population having access to clean drinking water. Therefore, there is an overwhelming dependence on ground water for drinking purposes.

| 3. School Education
Context
In the flood affected districts, a total of 603 public schools have been completely destroyed while 2317 schools have been partially damaged. The details of damages and estimates pertaining to each school on prescribed Performa (vetted by World Bank Assessment Team) were taken from all of the Tehsil Officers of the Education Department. This exercise was completed on 10th September, 2010. On the basis of existing prices, an estimated amount of PKR 6 billion is needed for the reconstruction of the damaged/destroyed schools.
Public schools were made the initial shelters for the displaced people. For this purpose, 2064 schools are being used as Relief Camps (officially/un-officially) for flood affectees at present.
Strategy
All the government schools will be used for rehabilitation without compromising the students’ education. Heads of the schools are made responsible to maintain the schools infrastructure. Furthermore, the students and staff of schools will be mobilized to collect donations. Other initiatives include redistribution of free text books in flood affected schools, the distribution of “School in a Box Kit” in relief camps and fully damaged schools (sponsored by UNICEF), provision of temporary shelters for completely damaged schools, provision of clean drinking water and sanitation and mobilization of school councils for relief and rehabilitation activities.
